The Invention of Lying Movie Review

Right, here goes my first English Movie Review.

Have you ever imagined what the world would be like when no one can tell a lie? Well, the movie “The Invention of Lying” takes place in that particular world.

The movie tells a story about the life of Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais), an insignificant guy who worked at a movie production and is about to be fired. Mark has always been and seen as a loser but it all changes when he told and discovered the world’s first lie. His life turned upside down and especially when his lie towards his dying mother was heard by everyone which I’ll be explaining later.

Well, I don’t want to spoil the whole movie so I’ll talk about the interesting things that I found in this movie should the whole world couldn’t tell a lie.

Everything You Say is Considered a Fact
Since everyone is always saying and listening to facts, that if you told someone a lie that person will believe it no matter what. This is shown when Mark told his friends that his name was Doug, then his friends just said, “Oh, hey Doug.”, it is rather funny on how people just dumbly believe Mark’s lies especially his lie about how he invented the bike.

"I found America."

Prejudice on Appearance
Well, everyone here believes in what they see hence they tend to judge people by their appearance. In one of the scene, Mark asked Anna (Jeniffer Garner) on what she sees in a couple who were sitting in a bench. She answered that they were losers with funny hats then Mark shared his view, he said that if you look deeply you’ll see that those two were in love. Anna finds this very confusing yet amusing and she asked how did do that. Here, we find out that prejudice is such a habit that by not doing so it confuses a person.

"He dresses like a smart guy, he's gotta be genius."

The Truth Hurts
As mentioned above, everyone always said the truth; this “truth” is based on what they see and feel. So if someone saw you as skinny, uneducated and smelly guy, they’ll say it right in your face. And if someone hates you they’ll also say it straight to you without even feeling any guilt. Life would be so depressing to those people without the “right” look. Like how Brad Kessler (Rob Lowe), Mark’s rival in the movie production, said it straight up that he hated Mark and intentionally put him in the 13th Century section, where nothing happened except the Black Death so that Mark will get fired.

"Honey, you're getting older, get a new face."

No Science-Fiction/Imagination (Worst for me)
Well, since everything is based on fact, people are unable to think of something that isn't real. Thus, all movies there was just a retelling of history and what happened in the past. The movies don’t even require actors, just a reader to tell what had happened. And people actually went to theaters to watch this. Say what??

That's right Star Wars fanboy, none of these.

Lack of Religion
As mention above, since people don’t believe in what they see, there are no such things as religion. People there believe that after they died that it’ll be the end of them. When Mark’s mother was dying, she was so afraid of death which then made Mark made up a story about the afterlife, unfortunately, his descriptions of the afterlife was heard by the doctor and nurses. News spread fast then voila, everyone around the world was curious to hear about the afterlife that Mark “knew”. It gets better at this part so I won’t spoil it out.

This guy would be considered right, globally. (Chales Darwin)

There are many more interesting about this alternate world so I really recommend you to watch it. And this is also a good comedy-romance movie so you could watch it you’re your partner. Sorry if my English is messed-up because I’m not really that good in grammar and this is my first English article. Do correct me if I’m wrong.
